Day Three

Day # 3

SP-1 LTAD Competition Review and Recommendations

The Long Term Athlete Development Overview document outlines a stage by stage approach to develop rowers in Canada. As part of the review, RCA has taken the recommendations in the overview document to the next step. What should be developed at each stage of athlete development and is our competition system reinforcing these objectives. This workshop will outline the key competition review recommendations. Coaches will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the implications for their programs based on these recommendations.

S2/3- 2 Selection of Crew vs. Selection of a Team - Howie Campbell

It is always a challenge for a coach to decide who should be in the crew. The criterion for selection is something the coach must articulate early in the season. This workshop will outline the essential elements that must be included in selection. The presenters will provide examples of selection situations that have gone well and others when there have been challenges. There will be a discussion about the challenges in running selection in a club environment where equipment may be limited. This session is intended to introduce selection to Level 2 coaches and to prepare Level 3 coaches for their practical task on Selection.

S4-2 Preparation of the Pre-elite Athlete for the National Training Centre

-Terry Paul, Al Morrow, Andy Van Neutegem
Across the country, rowers train and compete – some with the intention of trying out for a national team. How does a coach know when the athlete is ready to make the move to a national training centre? Andy will share information on capacity profiling used in a variety of sports. Al and Terry will discuss performance benchmarks that indicate if an athlete is ready to make the move from the club to a national training centre.

SA-2 Rigging for the Adaptive Rower – Volker Nolte & Allison Sheard

What do we know about rigging singles and doubles for athletes with a disability? Adaptive rowing is relatively new and therefore, little research has been done regarding the most effective rigging for adaptive rowers. In this workshop, we will discuss effective rigging based on the rower's disability. In this workshop, we will discuss the athlete’s size, strength, endurance and disability in relation to rigging a boat for adaptive rowing.

S2 & 3 – 3 – The Winless Coach – Jason Dorland

Come and learn from Jason Dorland, and his own personal experiences from the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the utter disappointment that he experienced as a result of his win-at-all-costs approach to competition. Discover how he successfully changed the focus of his coaching style from winning to that of unlimited personal excellence for his athletes. Teachers and coaches will find out how to get the most out of their athletes and achieve top results - all without focusing on the outcome. Jason will also discuss the psychological and emotional factors of competing with a 'win-at-all-costs' approach and inspire you to perhaps re-think your own coaching philosophies and ensure a positive personal coaching legacy.

S4-3 Current injury trends in rowers and their prevention

-Heather Griffiths and Ed McNeely
Heather, RCA Athletic Therapist, works full time with the athletes at the Victoria Training Centre where she treats rowing injuries on a daily basis. One of her goals is to minimize lost training time. In this session, Heather will identify a number of common injuries and discuss their causes. Ed McNeely has worked with athletes across many sports including rowing and will demonstrate important exercises that can help prevent some of these
common injuries.

SA-3 Technique and the Adaptive Rower – Al Morrow and Allison Sheard

Over the past few years, we have seen development in the rowing technique for adaptive rowing. This session will look at technique used at the last two world championships in both the trunk and arms and arms category.

SO-3/4a-4

High School Rowing Programs – recruitment, retention, and streaming for a performance program Gavin McKay
Gavin will share some innovative ideas of how to build a successful high school rowing program that identifies strategies to get students into the rowing program. How do we get them, keep them and for those who wish to excel, what kinds of programs can encourage these athletes to continually to strive for personal bests?

SO-3/4b-4

What is happening around the world that we can use in our Canadian Rowing Programs? Wes Hyde (Germany) Volker Nolte (New Zealand), Carsten Hassing (Denmark)
During the last year, two coaches from Canada have had the opportunity to work in rowing programs in Germany and in New Zealand. Wes and Volker will share some of the unique aspects of these programs and identify some ideas that could be used in rowing programs in Canada. Carsten will discuss features of the Danish rowing system and offer suggestions program elements that could be considered in the development of rowing in Canada.

SA-4 - Training Programs and the Integration of Strength Training for the TA and A Adaptive Rowers. - Ed McNeely

This presentation will focus on the development of strength training and flexibility programs for adaptive rowers. Emphasis will be placed on differences in recovery for different types of disability, the adaptation of strength exercises to meet athlete specific needs, and testing strength and other physical parameters for adaptive rowers.

S2-4  Equipment & Rigging - Chuck McDiarmid

As part of the Level 2 technical workshop, Chuck will review how to measure span, pitch, height and foot angles. He will also demonstrate how to adjust rigging on both sculling and sweep boats. Participants should come prepared to try some elements of rigging. Chuck will also spend some time discussing innovations in rowing equipment – oars and shells.
