NCCP Courses and Rowing Canada Aviron

Currently, Rowing Canada Aviron is going through a transition to a competency-based education and training (CBET) program as part of the coaching education program. As a result of a survey conducted by the Coaching Association of Canada and follow-up recommendations by National Certification Council, all National Sport Federations will be involved in this transition over the next few years. Presently, RCA provides education/training for coaches and instructors in the following areas:

Level 1 Technical

The Level 1 Program prepares coaches to understand the needs of the entry level rower and particular attention is paid to: rowing specific safety, motor learning and teaching skills effectively, ethics, training program and design, strength training, rowing technique, rules of racing and rigging.

The practical component of the Level 1 provides an opportunity for the coach to demonstrate his/her knowledge and skills to get certification. Contact your provincial rowing association for details regarding assessors in your area. Download the Level One Practical Assessment (pdf format).

Level 2 Technical

The Level 2 program prepares coaches to work with athletes competing on the club regatta circuit and particular attention is paid to: the relationships and connections between rigging & technique, selecting and working with a crew, identification of errors and corrections, strength training, and training program and design with the integration of strength training. Download the Level Two Practical Assessment (pdf format).

The practical component of the Level 2 provides an opportunity for the coach to demonstrate his/her knowledge and skills to attain certification. Contact your provincial rowing association for details regarding assessors in your area.

Level 3 Technical

The Level 3 program prepares the coach to work in a higher level sport system whereby he/she might be responsible for building and selecting a provincial team. At this level, particular attention is paid to: working with athletes performing at a "provincial standard", developing a training and monitoring program for a team of athletes, rigging individual athletes, monitoring athlete performance, safety and technique and video analysis.

The practical component for the Level 3 provides an opportunity for the coach to demonstrate his/her knowledge and skills in a practical environment. Completing the 5 tasks under the supervision of approved assessor, the coach will attain certification at this level. Contact Carolyn Trono for more information on completing the Level 3 practical component.
