TRANSITION TO THE NEW NCCP

 Background:

As of April 1, 2004, the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) no longer offers Level 1 or Level 2 Theory. All National Sport Federations are transitioning to the new NCCP which is based on a competency based methodology. This transition will emphasize more of a focus on what participants
need in various streams and contexts including community, instruction and competition. All curriculum will be based upon what the coach/instructor needs to be able to do in order to effectively support the participant. As well, evaluation will be a mandatory part of the competition and instruction stream.

Where is Rowing Canada Aviron in the transition?
Rowing Canada Aviron has developed a Learn to Row Instructors Course. This workshop is intended for individuals who are teaching the learn to row sessions at the rowing club. The emphasis is on safety, analyzing beginner rowing, error detection and correction, ethical decision making and planning/adapting LTR lessons.

This workshop is intended to replace Level 1 technical where all elements of the workshop relate to what the LTR instructor needs to know and do to support beginner participants. There will be an evaluation component as there is with the Level 1 practical.

All provincial rowing associations have at least one person who is familiar and able to run these workshops.

At this time, RCA is beginning to transition the current Level 1 & 2 technical into the new NCCP. We will be integrating the multi-sport material (Part A & B) into the rowing workshops.

As a new coach, what should I take?
If you are coaching entry level competitive rowers, you should take Level 1 & 2 technical as well as Part A & Part B of the multi-sport workshops. Once these are complete, you can take your Level 1 and 2 practical. Upon successful completion you will be fully certified at Level 2. When Rowing Canada Aviron launches the “RCA Coach” context, you will automatically receive certification
for that.

What if I am fully certified at Level 2 now?
If you have completed all of the requirements of Level 2 (including the practical after 1998), you will only have to take the Ethical Decision Making module. After taking the Ethical Decision Making module, you must successfully complete the online evaluation. Then you will move into the new database as a certified Rowing Canada Coach.

What if I have only taken Level 1 and Level 2 Technical?
You should take the Multi-sport Part A and B. You should complete your practical evaluations. Upon successful completion of these as well as the online Ethical Decision Making evaluation you will move to the new database as a Rowing Canada Coach.

What if I am fully certified at Level 1?
If this is the case, you should take the multi-sport Part B, Ethical Decision Making, Level 2 Technical and then complete your practicals. Upon successful completion of these plus the Ethical Decision Making evaluation, you will be moved into the new database as a Rowing Canada Coach.

Is there an expiry date for my certification?
Under the new NCCP, there is a minimum time frame where certification is only valid for 5 years. Each National Sport Federation determines how this is renewed.
For Rowing Canada Aviron coaches, this will likely be participation in professional development seminars and active coaching. However, this has not been finalized.

When will Rowing Canada Aviron have this completed?
We expect that it will be two years before we have the competition-introduction context fully up and running. This includes integrating all of the new material, piloting workshops, creating evaluation tools, and training new facilitators across the country to deliver a standard workshop. We hope that this will be finished sooner but at this stage, we are predicting two years.
