Adaptive Rowing Athletes to Receive Funding
Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) congratulates the following adaptive athletes on receiving carding (financial assistance) from the Government of Canada.
- Meghan Montgomery of Winnipeg, Man.
- Anthony Theriault of Victoria, B.C.
- Caitlin Renneson of Ottawa, Ont.
- Wilfredo Moré Wilson of Toronto, Ont.
- Jeff Standfield of Vancouver, B.C.
"Solid results from the 2006 World Championships - two bronze and two fourth place finishes - were a significant step on our way to the launch of adaptive rowing at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing," says RCA's National Adaptive Coordinator, Allison Sheard. "The funding support of Sport Canada is a valuable investment in our athletes as they work to realize their potential."
The athletes listed above were all members of the team that competed at the 2006 World Rowing Championships in Eton, England. This is the first time carding support has been extended to rowing’s adaptive athletes.
Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program (AAP) provides financial assistance to Canadian high-performance athletes to improve Canadian performance at major international sporting events such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, and World Championships.
Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA), the national governing body for rowing in Canada and a recognized National Sport Organization by Sport Canada, is tasked by Sport Canada with the management of the Rowing AAP policy. RCA and Sport Canada officials meet annually to review the athlete nominations for AAP support and to determine adjustments to the policy.
