Rowing Canada Aviron's New President Announced

Effective this week, Rowing Canada Aviron's President is Dr. Michael Murphy of London, Ontario.
 Mike Murphy
Murphy, a former national team rower, was an RCA board member from 1985 to 2002, serving as president or past president for the last 13 years.  During the latter period, he was a key figure in the centralization, the systematization and the professionalization of the organization.

"I am very much looking forward to working with athletes, clubs, provinces, national executive and staff and FISA (the international rowing federation) to maintain and improve rowing in Canada and abroad," said Murphy, who is also a professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Ontario.

Murphy, who will provide direction and leadership to RCA leading up to the Summer Olympics in 2012, is the former chair of the Sport Alliance of Ontario and was co-chair of the 2004 Ontario Summer and Winter Games. He replaces Brenda Liski, who finished her term as president at this past weekend's Annual General Meeting in Vancouver.

RCA is a nonprofit organization recognized by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in Canada. RCA represents 15,000 registered members at all levels, novices, juniors, university students, seniors and masters, whether they row for recreation, health and fitness or competition. Rowing is one of Canada’s top Olympic summer sports – garnering four medals at the 2008 Games in Beijing.
