"This new complement of staff provides much needed expertise and program support in all areas of current RCA programming and, in particular, these additions respond to our Board’s request for a stronger staff driven organizational model for RCA into the future," said Ian Moss, Executive Director of RCA. The full announcement can be found on our web site .

  • Jarret Poitras - National Team Assistant
  • Anne Murfitt - Finance Officer
  • Heather Griffiths - Athletic Therapist

Rowing Canada Aviron is also moving forward with the creation of a Domestic Development Officer – Sport Technical position that will be based in Ontario; an announcement on that position will be provided in the near future.

Megan Delehanty to be Inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame

Megan Delehanty was born and raised in Edmonton. As a track athlete at the University of Alberta in 1988, she was working out in the weight room, and was approached by a member of the rowing club to see if she would be interested in trying a new sport.

Megan started training at the Edmonton Rowing Club and excelled in club regattas. She continued as a rower at the University of British Columbia. She won a spot on the Canadian National Rowing Team and represented Canada as a member of the Under-23, Women’s 8+ at the United States Rowing Championship in 1990. From there, she moved up to the Canadian Senior A team, and in 1991 was a member of the World Champion Women’s 8+.

Megan was a member of the Canadian Women’s Eight team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona when the team won the gold medal. Her road to the Olympics had not been a smooth one as Megan had a serious injury and spent four of the seven months prior to the Games missing water training. She managed to keep her fitness at a high level with alternate training methods during her rehabilitation period, ultimately making and contributing to the Olympic eight team.

Megan retired from rowing after the 1992 Olympic Games and continued to pursue her academic career, earning a Ph.D in Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. The success, stories and perseverance of the 1992 Canadian Olympic rowing team, as a whole, helped raise awareness and bring new members to the sport and to rowing clubs all across Canada.

The Inductees will be honoured at a banquet on Friday, June 1, 2007 at the Capri Centre, Red Deer, Alberta. The banquet is an opportunity to meet this year's Inductees as well as many of our Honoured Member Alumni.

Canadians in Oxford - Cambridge Boat Race

2006 Canadian national team rower Kip McDaniel, right, of Cobble Hill, B.C., and 2005 National Team member Dan O'Shaughnessy of Brockville, Ont., are Cambridge crewmates for the annual race against Oxford.

The 153rd race on the River Thames is April 7. Oxford has won four of the last five races. Cambridge leads the overall series 78-73. One race, in 1877, ended in a draw.

McDaniel was stroke of the Canadian men's eight at the 2006 world championships in Eton, England, and he also was in the men's four that won bronze at the 2005 world regatta in Japan. McDaniel was in the Cambridge crew last year when it was beaten by an Oxford crew that included national teammates Barney Williams and Jake Wetzel. McDaniel previously rowed for Harvard.

O'Shaughnessy was in the Canadian men's coxed four at the 2005 World Championships in Japan, and he has also rowed for Syracuse University.

Andrew Wright, who is rowing on the Oxford crew, is originally from Burlington, Ont., and has duel citizenship with the US.

RCA's National Development Workshop

This month Rowing Canada Aviron had its first Domestic Development workshop in approximately six years! The workshop focused on domestic priorities with all nine rowing provinces having representation. With the VP recreation, Carolyn Taylor-Smith, the President of Rowing Canada Aviron Brenda Liski and RCA’s Executive Director Ian Moss in attendance, the provinces had RCA’s full attention on what the varied domestic needs are nationwide. The workshop as a whole was particularly helpful for the two domestic development officers currently working for RCA - Dave Derry and Jennifer Browett.

It not only became clear throughout the workshop what provinces need to gain growth and sustainability, it also provided a networking opportunity for the provinces where best practices were discussed-both formally and informally. In addition, Carolyn Trono the director for coach education for RCA spoke to the long term athlete development plan and the new NCCP coaching system.

RCA’s hope is to take on a bigger role with the domestic development across the country.

The next meeting for RCA is the Board meeting at the end of this month (March 30 - April 1).
